'Project Connect'
<for assisting the elderly>
This project aims at providing voice-driven and voice-search-enabled multi-functional support system to the elderly residents in the Old Age Homes and on different floors or non-contiguous areas on the same floor of a building with their family members and / or caretakers.
The idea of the project came from two young undergraduate students: Arpit Agrawal and Sharinik Jain; who were interested in voice-search algorithms and a computer science professor, at BITS-Pilani, who thought to link their desire to work in this area with a project of wider (social) significance by building a solution involving inexpesive mobile devices and seamlessly interfacing them with the external world for multiple relevant services right from assistance for bodily support from the volunteers / attendants to their communication with their physicians and even connecting them automatically with their children and grand children anywhere around the globe --- all through a simple voice request and without any textual entry.
Project Communicate
<for assisting the autistic children>
This project aims at designing ubiquitous computing frameworks to empower autistic children and their caregivers in India. We realize that the diagnosis of mental disorders especially those associated with autism in children, at an early stage, preferably before school going age, is vital to ensuring a complete and happy life ahead for the child. Hence, the vision for Project Communicate is two-fold in nature viz.
i. Early detection of cognitive abnormalities in children and their possible correlation to autism symptoms in children. (Pre-detection phase)
ii. Design of assistive ubiquitous computing solutions (wearable or otherwise) to empower the autistic children and/or their caregivers to boost social interactions and facilitate effective communication. (Post-detection phase)
This project is in its early stage taking shape as a mini-project for the graduate-level course: Pervasive Computing at BITS, Pilani. Idea for this project came from two graduate students: Prasanta Bhattacharya and Ruchir Hajela who along with a Computer Science Professor tried to give a concrete shape to it.
